Put E7J in to 1996 Twingo? - Fitch - 09.09.2010

Hello, My name is Nir, I'm 23 from Israel.

I have an opportunity to buy 1996 twingo with engine problem for a good price. Since I already had an original 1995 one, with the 55BHP 1239cc motor, I thought to put in to the 1996 more powerful engine.

The E7J is very common in Israel from the R5, R19 etc. and produces around 80BHP which is not bad...

I searched the web to look for a project like this, but everyone put in the 1.6 Megane engine or the 16V Clio one - this conversions aren't LEGAL in Israel. So the only sane option is the one I'm talking about.

Is there any problems to fit E7J engine in to a Twingo? (both the c3g and the e7j comes from the same R5 model).
What else I'll need to replace in order to run the engine properly (A/C? TRANSMISSION? ECU?)?

Thank you in advance,
best regards,
Nir Svirski.

Hi Fitch,

basically it´s same effort like a 1,6e conversion, i think you can keep your gearbox, as this engine uses also jb1 and the starter is also located at the rear. The ratios will fit also quite well.

I think only one thing might become tricky:

The airfilter housing at the top of the engine. May be it´s too high and big and you need to replace it by the plunger of e.g. the Clio/R19 1.8 88hp engine (F3P with single point injection)...

...and install an external filter housing. Or perhaps a open cone filter at the top of the engine, but I think this is also illegal in israel and will reduce power due to hot air sucking.

regards

Hi Oliver, thank you for the reply.

What about the engine mounts or the manifolds, any problem there?

What about the A/C, ECU, Alternator?

About the air filter, I think it's easy problem to solve (K&N suction kit).

Thanks,
Nir.

I think that´s clear, that the exhaust system has to be modified. I would use manifold, down pipe and catalyst from the E7J and make the flange of the twingo-mid-section specific.

If you use the engine out of the R19 then it should fit without problems as the R19 also like the Twingo don´t use the upper right engine mount, so you don´t need another timing belt cover:

Regarding AC, and alternator this should fit, may be the hoses have to modified. Does your twingo actually have AC?

Regarding ECU: I would try to get a complete engine, that means engine with ALL ancillary units, the COMPLETE engine cable harness, with ALL sensors INCLUDING the ECU.
